It
was Friday the 27th of July. Most of Lindisfarne primary school were
climbing onto the buses in various colours and costumes to go to Kingscliff
Little Athletics sporting arena.
When
we got there, the buses were unloaded and we walked over to our house areas. We
were amazed at how many people and volunteers there were.
The
first event was 100 metres which is a big sprint. Everyone was lined up and
feeling very nervous. The gun went off and we bolted for the finish line. Next
was High Jump. 8, 9, 10 years girls and boys lined up to attempt the starting
height. Only a few made the jump but the overall winner was Kaiya.
Next
was the 200 metres sprint. Lots of children moved to the marshaling area. We
had to wait for a long time before it was our turn to run because there were so
many people. Then we had Discus although I was confident that I could make it I
was about a centimetre off the qualifying mark and it was upsetting that I
didn’t make it through. (Emma’s discus story.)
After
that, we had the 800 metres, which was twice round the field. It was the last
track race. There were competitive races, but also lots of spirit racers. (A
spirit race is when you skip, dance, scream, shuffle etc.)
The
two last events were Long Jump and Shot Putt. For long jump dozens and dozens
of girls lined up to have a try at the hard starting length. Several girls made
it through but most of us under-jumped the length. Shot Putt had much less competitors
then long jump. The length was hard and only some made it to Coffs Harbour.
Then we had a fun tug-of-war before getting on the bus to go back to school. I
can’t wait till next year!
